The reason for dealing with the complexity of the flyback transformer instead of using<br>
a HV switch is HV switches are expensive or unreliable+dangerous, take your pick.<br>
A copper knife switch will do, if you like frankenstein like<br>
laboratories...but it will wear from the arcs on it.<br>

They make HV switches that are in a vacuum and weigh a pound and are just a relay.<br>
<br>
Very low performance -- slow. Would not be possible to stretch out a pulse by repeated<br>
input switchings and the ratchet pumping effect of the HV diode.<br>
<br>
The HV diode is cheap, since they are used in microwave ovens everywhere. HV switches are<br>
$75 used on ebay and $2K new. Go figure.<br>
