I tried moving my debug LED flashing program lines down down down and they
have to be at the end to not be reset.  timers_init()  resets them, and
it has function a(44,20,0) in it, so that must wipe out GPIO settings.

It's not obvious why.  Will need to look at it.

When I say reset LED flashing, I mean "turns off".
