Would it dampen the response and smooth out the pulse?   The ringing after the rising edge, I mean.

It's about cost and function.  I'll be asking the transformer maker(s) about costs when I get a specification for them,
and if it is easy, yes that would do to get to 3kV.  There can be limits to HV closeness in a bobbin wound xfmr -- if
not spread out enough it arcs.  That can mean a bigger core and all...  If a doubler will handle the 30 k Ohm load, it is cheap
and it spreads the HV out a lot, so it can be reliable.  My gut says 3kV may be pushing some practical limits...

Not sure what "dead time" means.   The ringing won't go away for maybe 5X the cycle time I showed there.
I'll show you some more waveforms tomorrow.  55% duty cycle is what I'm interested in.  That can be overlapped
from 2 pulsers diode OR'd for
continuous summed voltage with some ripple.
